Trump issues new war warning and declares ‘bad things are going to happen'
President Donald Trump has once again sparked escalating tensions between the US and Afghanistan, following his thinly disguised threat posted on Truth Social demanding the nation return Bagram Airbase.
Trump delivered a chilling warning about "bad things" that would occur if they failed to meet his demands return Bagram.
Posting online late Saturday evening, Trump declared: "If Afghanistan doesn't give Bagram Airbase back to those that built it, the United States of America, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN!" It comes after Trump and Melania's unusual sleeping arrangements at Windsor Castle were exposed.
The remarks represented the most recent intensification in a continuing dispute with the Taliban following the president's announcement during his London visit that Washington planned to reclaim the strategic facility.
During his second state visit to Britain on Thursday, Trump revealed at a press conference with Keir Starmer that he sought to recover the airbase due to its strategic location near China.
Trump has consistently alleged in recent months that Bagram operates under Chinese authority, claims that both Beijing and the Taliban have vehemently denied.
"We're trying to get it back - by the way, that could be a little breaking news," Mr Trump declared. "We're trying to get it back because they need things from us."
He continued: "One of the reasons we want the base is, as you know, it's an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons."
The Taliban, however, called the president's remarks "baseless and strange," while also firmly asserting they would "never hand Bagram over to anyone."
The airbase, located approximately 40 miles north of Kabul, served as the foundation of U.S.-led operations in Afghanistan for two decades after the American mission to topple the Taliban commenced in 2001 following the Sept. 11 attacks.
It was deserted in 2021 as part of a pullout of U.S. forces during Joe Biden's presidency, just weeks before the Taliban seized power.
Trump has sharply condemned his political opponent for the choice, especially as he alleges it left $7 billion worth of American weapons and other equipment in the group's possession.
