Naveed Akram named by Australian media as Bondi Beach shooting suspect
Naveed Akram was named by Australian media as an alleged shooting suspect in the Bondi Beach massacre in that country.
ABC Australia cited a senior law enforcement official and wrote, "One of the alleged shooters in the deadly attacks at Bondi Beach in Sydney was Naveed Akram, a man from the city's south-west." NDTV also named one of the gunmen as Akram.
There were ongoing law enforcement efforts in the wake of the massacre, which targeted the Jewish community and left 11 people dead and 29 injured, according to the BBC. News.com.au said the death count had risen to 12, adding that a rabbi and Holocaust survivor were among them.
According to the BBC, "armed police have swarmed a property at Bonnyrigg which is believed to be the home of one of the Bondi Beach gunmen."
ABC Australia noted of Akram: "Akram's home in the suburb of Bonnyrigg was being raided by police on Sunday evening," December 14. The attack unfolded, involving multiple shooters, as members of the Jewish community gathered to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah.
According to ABC Australia, one gunman was killed at the scene, and the other was injured, but it's not clear which was allegedly Akram. However, News.com.au, which also named Akram as one of the alleged gunmen, reported that he was the shooter who survived.
The chaotic and horrific scene was captured in videos, including one showing a heroic bystander tackling and disarming one of the shooters.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said in a news conference that one of the suspects "has very, very little knowledge to the police so he's not someone we would've been looking at, at this time," according to NDTV. Again, it's not clear which suspect he was referring to.
