Indonesia ready to step up role in Palestine peace: FM Sugiono

Foreign Minister Sugiono affirmed that Indonesia is ready to take a more active role in promoting a just and sustainable peace for Palestine, including through the Board of Peace (BoP) and the International Stabilization Force (ISF).

According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Tuesday, Sugiono conveyed the statement during a bilateral meeting with Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Varsen Aghabekian Shahin on the sidelines of the High-Level Segment of the 61st Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday (Feb 23).

Sugiono said Indonesia would work to ensure that the transition process aligns with the interests of the Palestinian people and the principles of international law.

He also reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to contributing to the sustainability of the ceasefire and to advancing a credible political process toward a Two-State Solution.

Regarding Indonesia’s planned contribution to the International Stabilization Force, Sugiono emphasized that the main focus of the Indonesian contingent would be the protection of civilians and the provision of humanitarian assistance.

He also welcomed the establishment of a Liaison Office by the Palestinian Authority to strengthen coordination with the Board of Peace.

In addition, Sugiono said Indonesia would continue to utilize various international forums to rally support for Palestine, including at the D-8 Summit scheduled for April 15, 2026.

Indonesia plans to hold a special session on Palestine on the sidelines of the summit as part of efforts to reinforce solidarity and international support, and expressed hope to welcome a Palestinian visit to Jakarta in the near future.

The Palestinian foreign minister expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s consistent political support for the Palestinian cause and thanked Indonesia for the humanitarian assistance provided to the Palestinian people.

Indonesia officially joined the Board of Peace established by United States President Donald Trump on January 22, 2026, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

At the inaugural Board of Peace meeting in Washington, DC, on February 19, President Prabowo Subianto stated that Indonesia is ready to deploy 8,000 Indonesian National Armed Forces personnel to serve alongside the International Stabilization Force in Gaza, Palestine.

Indonesia has also been appointed Deputy Commander of the International Stabilization Force and holds an operational role as one of the largest troop-contributing countries to the peace mission in Palestine.

As chair of the D-8 for the 2026–2027 period, Indonesia will host the D-8 Summit in Jakarta on April 15, 2026, under the theme “Navigating Global Shifts: Strengthening Equality, Solidarity, and Cooperation for Shared Prosperity.”

The D-8 organization was established on June 15, 1997, in Turkey and comprises Indonesia, Malaysia, Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. Azerbaijan officially joined the D-8 in December 2024.
