 President Donald Trump turned up at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix to scattered applause. Trump appeared thrilled about the occasion, declaring, "We're celebrating greatness with American motor racing."

However, at this stage, it remains uncertain whether it's lived up to his hopes. Before the official race, Trump and first lady Melania completed a lap in the presidential limousine around a temporary street circuit close to the U.S. Capitol. The president and first lady were safely positioned in the rear seat of the Beast as the drive got underway.

Prior to their lap, Trump addressed reporters, though his hair captured attention as it was swept backwards and upwards. The president's scalp became visible, and the moment occurs weeks after his hair generated buzz for looking fuller than usual and shifting through different shades as he addressed crowds at venues nationwide. It comes after Trump was ridiculed as his 'entire head of hair' flew off as he stepped off Marine One.

Today's ceremonial lap launches a day of competition in the nation's capital, showcasing IndyCar vehicles racing on a 1.7-mile downtown track.

The occasion functions as a highlight of the continuing America250 festivities, which commemorate the nation's semiquincentennial, reports the Mirror US.

The prominent race was arranged in partnership with federal officials and IndyCar series owner Roger Penske, creating a substantial sporting presence in the capital area. Trump doesn't come across as a gearhead, but when it comes to guys and their toys, he fits right into that mold.

Riding in the back of a limousine isn't quite the same as piloting a race car, but it's still an enjoyable experience either way.

At the same time, Trump appeared to take more of a casual cruise, rather than channeling his inner speed demon like the race car drivers set to follow his ceremonial lap.

Installing a race track through Washington, D.C., proved to be a massive undertaking.

City crews and race officials spent weeks getting the downtown pavement ready. Safety measures demanded that workers weld shut over 200 manhole covers along the 1.7-mile course.

The main competition covers 250 miles and demands drivers complete 147 laps around the narrow, concrete-walled street circuit.

Before the start, Trump spoke to reporters from the track, emphasizing the teamwork needed to arrange and deliver the race. Turnout was lighter than anticipated, however.

“We didn’t have a long line,” spectator Maria Papi told CNN. She shared that it took her about a minute to pass through the checkpoint and that the process was quick and smooth.

Attendee Doug Mailat said the entry process as "very efficient" and that he also didn't encounter a long wait.

Officials hoped the occasion would attract significant crowds to the capital as part of the wider national anniversary festivities.
